Tips for Going into Natural Resources

After talking with representatives from both the University of Montana and University of Idaho Colleges of Forestry and Natural Resources, along with natural resource professionals, here are the top tips to make succeed in the natural resources field.

1. Be Flexible

One of the main reasons natural resource graduates may not find jobs is that they are looking for either a very specific type of job or a specific location. Unfortunately, it's not likely to find open natural resource jobs in a location of your choosing exactly when you want them. If you're thinking of entering natural resources, be aware that you might have to move around.

2. Become Diverse and Experienced

When hiring in natural resources, employers look for candidates who have the most experience and skills. It is very important to start getting experience early, rather that be an internship or just volunteering.

3. Build Communication Skills

There aren't many natural resource jobs that don't require good communication skills. In fact, most require working together closely with others or educating people about nature. Verbal and written communication skills are essential to working in natural resources.

4. Acknowledge the Job Market

Coming right out of college, it's not likely to obtain a full-time job right out of the gate. Accept that you might be working part-time or seasonal jobs, and build connections so you have relationships down the road.
